Sydling Brook Organic Farm Livestock
We have selected high quality pedigree stock from traditional and rare breeds which are particularly suited to thrive in our natural conditions. We are seeking, where possible, to produce our own feed and to breed all our own livestock replacements, thereby maximising natural cycles and minimising disease.
All our breeds mature well on these natural inputs, have strong maternal instincts and thrive outdoors all the year round. All are extensively grazed, weaned late and matured slowly, with a strong emphasis on achieving the highest health status. Our animals are treated with great care and respect, thus minimising stress. The abattoir is only 7 miles away and the poultry are slaughtered on the farm.
We are lucky to have extensive areas of clover leys, chalk downland (lots of herbs and wild flowers) and even old river meadows on which our livestock can graze. All the clover leys we establish include a range of herbs and grasses such as chicory, timothy and burnet. This allows for a wider ranging and we believe a healthier forage diet.
We believe strongly in optimising the animal’s living conditions thereby minimising disease, with antibiotics only being used in exceptional circumstances.
